- <p> DIED. DAVEY ALLISON, 32, race-car driver; of injuries suffered
- in a helicopter crash; in Birmingham, Alabama. Allison was the
- last active member of a stock-car dynasty: the career of his
- father Bobby stalled following a 1988 accident; his brother
- Clifford died in a practice run in Michigan barely a year ago.
- Allison himself broke bones and suffered a concussion last year
- in a crash at a Pennsylvania racetrack--but typically, he
- was back racing within a week, wearing a special cast that allowed
- him to work the steering wheel and gear shift. At the time of
- his death, Allison was the most celebrated of his clan. He was
- named NASCAR's Rookie of the Year in 1987, and won 19 races
- on the stock circuit, capped in 1992 by a victory in the sport's
- premiere event, the Daytona 500. Allison was piloting the helicopter
- when, just before landing, it spun out of control. In Allison's
- home state of Alabama, flags flew at half-mast.
